Snippets and Tips - March 2017

Snippets and Tips.
Following good rains Marloth is looking green and lush, but much of the greenery is not edible for
our animals. We still need to ask property owners to continue the planting of grass seed.
Alien plant removal is going well with the help of many people. However, much still needs to be
done. We can advise owners as to which plants to remove from their property.
Easter will soon be upon us with the influx of many visitors who we sincerely hope have a wonderful
time in our beautiful place.
Please would homeowners assist us by advising guests not to hand feed the animals.
Although they may appear tame, they are still wild. Some instances observed are: Feeding Zebra
while standing in a group of the animals, handfeeding Ostrich and allowing children to attempt to
feed Warthog that have piglets. Feeding of Primates should not be done at all as Baboons and Vervet
Monkeys become extremely aggressive over time. They could attack and seriously injure someone.
There have already been instances of aggressive behaviour by baboons towards people in Marloth
Park.
Please visit our Stall at the Easter Fair at Marlothii Trading Post. See our exhibits and we will gladly
help you with any queries you may have.
Kom kuier gerus by ons stalletjie tydens die Paasfees mark by Marlothii Handelspos.

The Snakes 0f Marloth Park - November 2016

You are invited to a morning course “An introduction to the snakes of Marloth Park.”

It will be presented by John Webb.

Date:           19 December 2016

Venue:         Jabula Lodge, Kurper Street, Marloth Park

Time:          9h00

Cost:           R30-00 per person.  Tea and coffee will be served.

RSVP:         John Webb   079 778 5359 or Genie Retief  0824646618.   Booking essential.

Snake activity has increased now that the days are warmer and the first rains have fallen. Many snakes move around in the early evenings. Snakes are not aggressive, nor will they chase people!  Stay 5m or more away from snakes and one cannot be bitten.  Snakes will move away when disturbed and will only strike if they feel threatened by being cornered or if someone is trying to catch them or kill them.   Prevent snakebite by leaving snakes alone. Be careful at night: wear closed shoes and use a torch.  Make sure there are no gaps under doors and keep doors and windows, that do not have flyscreens, closed. If you need a snake removed from your house phone John on 079 778 5359 or call Riaan at Field Security.

Die Slange van Marlothpark

U word uitgenooi na ’n oggendkursus getiteld “An introduction to the snakes of Marloth Park” (“Maak kennis met die slange van Marlothpark”) aangebied deur John Webb

Datum:              19 Desember 2016

Plek:                      Jabula Lodge,  Kurperstraat, Marlothpark

Tyd:                       09:00

Toegang:             R30,00 per person. Tee en koffie sal bedien word

RSVP: John Webb   079 778 5359 of Genie Retief 082 464 6618.

(079 778 5359) of Riaan by Field Sekuriteit skakel.

Control of Alien Invasive and exotic plants: September 2016

We call on all property owners of Marloth Park to control alien invasive and exotic plants on their land and surrounding areas.

Alien invasive plants are extremely detrimental to the natural environment.  They utilize our valuable water and spread at an alarming rate as they have no natural enemies.  All stands should be cleared of these plants as a top priority. New national legislation is being introduced and will be enforced from 1 October 2016, making it an offence to have NEMBA (National Environmental Biodiversity Act 2004) category plants on one’s property.  Common alien plants to remove here in Marloth Park are: Parthenium (Famine Weed), Triffid weed, Lantana, Queen of the Night, Goose Foot, Sisal, Donkey’s Ears, Devil’s Backbone, Mother of Thousands, American Agave, Potato Creeper and Madagascar Periwinkle (Vinca).  To recognize these plants visit the display at Field Security or at the Municipal reception. Visit www.marlothparkhonoraryrangers.co.za and look up the Alien Plants of Marloth Park. For further assistance call Diana van Rensburg ( 0822964477), Genie Retief (0824646618), Joce Gordon (0823065133), Uschi Powell (072 908 0350).

Property Owners can assist in establishing new grass Cover - October 2016

To enable us to have good grass cover in Marloth Park, purchase and plant pre-packed locally indigenous grass seed. Please contact:

Penelope Mayson 082 4017051This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Each packet contains 500g grass seed.  Cost: R90.00.  Coverage: 20 square meters.

Seed mixture: There are four varieties of seed, all indigenous to Marloth Park, sold as a mixture: Panicum maximum, Eragrostiscurvula, Cenchrusciliaris and Digitariaeriantha.

To rehabilitate the veld on your property, try to keep the grass protected until it has seeded, if possible. Each packet of grass seed comes with sowing instructions. You may find that some of the seed may only germinate a season from now.  This is a natural growing phenomenon.

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

Saadmengsel: Viersaadvariëteite — almalinheemsaanMarlothpark — is as ’n mengselbeskikbaar in elkepakkie.

Dis heel natuurlik.

Removing Alien Invasives: June 2016

WHAT TO DO WITH THE ALIEN PLANTS YOU REMOVE FROM YOUR STAND

Thank you to those property owners of Marloth Park who are removing alien plants from their stands.

Here are a few do’s and don’ts:

When removing succulent plants such as Prickly Pear (Opuntia stricta) and Queen of the Night (Cereus jamacaru) remove them by digging out roots and all. Either place these plants in the middle of the road to be destroyed by cars or take them to the main dump and place on the thatch, that will be found there, so that these plants will be burned. If you see these plants in the road, please drive over them! Never throw them back into the veld.

Do not cut them up, leave in the bush or leave hanging in the trees. These plants, and pieces of plants, will root again and the alien plant problem will be spread and made worse by these actions.

An alien plant that should never be placed on the road is Famine Weed (Parthenium hysterophorus), as these plants shed their seeds and the weed is distributed by cars transporting seeds on their tyres. Remove in refuse bags and place on the thatch at the dump, to be burnt. Some people are allergic to this plant and may develop a rash. Use gloves when uprooting this plant.

Another alien plant that should not be placed on the road, but should be removed and immediately placed in a refuse bag is Mother of Thousands (Bryophyllum delagoense) as each little piece of this plant can root and grow. Treat Devil’s Backbone (Kalanchoe diagremontiana) in the same way.

Please procure a copy of our “Alien Plants of Marloth Park” for further information on removing alien plants from your property or contact us for further information or to help you with removal of these plants.
